Coaching Staff
Campers work closely with experienced coaches and top professional players committed to helping athletes develop all aspects of their game, from technique and tactics to physical conditioning and mental training.
Below are coaches who have worked World Class Squash in recent years.
SHONA KERR
Director of World Class Squash Camps
Head Men’s and Women’s Squash Coach at Wesleyan University
Since becoming head men’s and women’s squash coach at Wesleyan in 2005, Kerr has guided both Cardinals teams into the top 20 in the national rankings. Her players have consistently earned all-league and all-academic honors, and in 2011 her peers named her the New England Small College Athletic Association Men’s Coach of the Year. Prior to her time at Wesleyan, Kerr coached at Wellesley College, where in 2002-2003 she led the Blue to their best record since 1984; the University of Wales Institutes Cardiff; and the Cardiff University squash club. An England Squash Association Level III certified coach, Kerr is also an accomplished player, having represented Wales internationally and winning national under-35 age group and 5.0 skill level titles in the United States.
SHAHIER RAZIK
Professional Squash Association (PSA) Player
Shahier Razik is the top-ranked player in Canada and is a five-time national champion. He has been ranked as high as #20 in the world and has consistently been in the top 30 in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) world rankings. He holds over 20 professional tour titles and has been a member of the Canadian National Team since 1999. He has experience working with players of all ages and ability levels and has worked in a variety of camp settings. He hols a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Ryerson University in Ontario.
JULIAN ILLINGWORTH
Professional Squash Association (PSA) Player
Julian Illingworth is the top-ranked player in the United States and is a seven-time national champion. He has been ranked as high as 28th in the world and has won four tour titles. He is a member of the United States National Team and has represented the U.S. in three world team championships. A graduate of Yale, he was a four-time First Team All-American and was one of the most successful American players in men’s intercollegiate squash in recent years.
WENDY BARTLETT
Head Women’s Squash and Tennis Coach at Trinity College
Wendy Bartlett is one of winningest coaches in the history of women’s college squash. Since becoming the head coach of women’s squash at Trinity College in the early 1980s, Bartlett has coached over twenty All-Americans and guided the Bantams to two national championships. Emphasizing hard work, perserverance, and skill development, Bartlett has made Trinity a perennial contender in the top division of intercollegiate squash. She is also the head coach of women’s tennis at Trinity and an associate professor of physical education. Bartlett holds a BA from Rollins College and a master’s in physical education from Central Connecticut State University.
TIM BACON
Head Squash Coach at Smith College
Tim Bacon is World Class Squash’s consultant in strength and conditioning as well as mental training. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a sports psychologist approved by the Canadian mental training registry, having worked with many of the top Canadian players over the last 15 years. Bacon also brings years of squash coaching experience with him. He is a Squash Canada Level 4 CSCS certified coach and has been Smith College’s head coach since 1994. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and holds an MA in Physical Education from the University of Western Ontario. He also has several years of advanced study in sport psychology at the Université de Montréal and has presented at a number of international coaching conferences.
PETE AVITABLE
Assistant Squash Coach at Brown University
Pete Avitable joined the Brown University squash program as an assistant coach in the fall of 2011. Before coming to Brown, Pete was the assistant coach for Connecticut College, helping guide the Camels to the 2010-2011 Conroy Cup (D Division) title at the Men’s National Team Championship. Before coaching at Conn, Avitable was the head squash pro with the Greater Albany Squash Association in Albany, New York, for 5 years. In Albany he worked with players of all levels, including several top juniors, and he also helped the Siena College squash club prepare for their first trip to the Men’s National Team Championships. A graduate of the University of Rochester, Avitable played with Fitzsimmons on the Yellowjackets’ squash team.
